The Method

The NFL Personality Analysis Method has taken the guesswork out of determining who has the intellectual tools/mental makeup to play the game.

NFL QB Mental Makeup Chart

Above Image: The basic 12 temperament types is one aspect of our mental makeup analysis. The above chart shows 3 of the 12 Personality Families have won almost 50% of all Super Bowls. Notice group #1 has 0 Super Bowl wins and there’s a reason – they prefer to conflict avoidance. That’s not good trait for an NFL QB to have. Additionally, group #1 contains some of the biggest QB busts in NFL history.

The method was discovered in 2011 and has evolved since then. The method lists personality/mental traits and categorizes players by them. Then we compare those traits to historical NFL players and generate a historical precedent as a predictive guide for both on and off the field performance. Now that the mental/intellectual aspects of successful NFL players have been systematized and categorized, an NFL team can find a player they want with those specific qualities. For example if the 49ers wanted a QB similar to Joe Montana, the PAM could find a guy with the same mental makeup traits. If the Colts wanted the next Peyton Manning type, that too is someone the NFL PAM could find. Then scouts and talent evaluators would take it from there. The research of a player’s mental makeup and potential NFL future no longer requires wasting millions of dollars and years in bad contracts but can be done effectively and efficiently. This allows for an organization to plan it’s future with a higher degree of certainty than ever before.

I started applying this analysis to the QB position for two reasons. First, it is the most important position on the field. Second, of all football positions the QB should show a correlation in our mental makeup matrix and it does, very clearly. The research revealed that a QB’s mental ability to process the game matters much more than physical ability. Exhibit A is Tom Brady who was a combine failure but 4 time Super Bowl winner.

Next historical data of Super Bowl winning QBs and all-time passing QBs was run through the NFL PAM matrix. It revealed which personality traits for NFL QBs are important and why. Using this data we can compare a current/draft/FA player’s mental makeup to historical players which provides us with another predictive insight into how they mentally process the NFL game in real-time. For example, in August 2015, we discovered that Tyrod Taylor has the exact mental makeup as Tom Brady. Even though they have different 40-times and physical abilities, they have similar mental traits which makes them both winning QBs. Both are clutch, both prefer to play in the pocket, both are leaders, both take hits, both are fierce fighters and both make good football decisions. Both are winning NFL QBs (and hopefully Tyrod will stay healthy, that group has problem with knee injuries ruining careers). Because the mental makeup correlation is almost an exact match we see these similarities on the field. Teams could have used the NFL PAM to acquire him from the Ravens and known what they had in Tyrod. Instead the Bills got lucky. Hopefully the Bills/Rex Ryan will manage him appropriately. Ironically Brady and Taylor were 6th round draft picks for the same reason, physical ability. Brady to was too unathletic and Taylor was ‘too much of a runner.’ Current evaluation methods are insufficient as they rely heavily on physical skills and zero ability to predicatively and historically compare a player’s mental makeup and potential NFL future. The NFL Combine and Wonderlic scores are somewhat useful but they don’t include the entire picture. The NFL PAM provides the most important missing piece.

The method is best employed in conjunction with current resources. Its insight augments decision making. It is useful for drafting, contract negotiating, player motivation, FA pickups, game planning (useful against opponents) and more.
